Alternative Economic Systems

Spring 2010

Course Description:

Introduction to the basic concepts needed for the comparative analysis of economic systems. We begin by reviewing the methodological concepts used for organizing, analyzing and comparing economic systems. Discussion of the structure, performance, efficiency and growth aspects of the competitive, the various socialist and national economic models is then explored. Throughout the course we will examination actual economic systems ranging from the "Anglo-Saxon" model (e.g. the United States), the "Social Welfare" model (e.g. Sweden), the "Asian Model" (e.g. China) and the movement toward regional economic integration (e.g. the European Union).

                                                          

Important Dates:

bulletTuesday, April 13th: Second exam (Worth 12.5% of total grade)
bulletTuesday, April 20th: Term papers due. Any paper handed in after this day receives a one letter grade penalty.
bulletSaturday, May 1: Final exam from 10:45 - 1:15
