Checklist/Due Dates:

The application process includes all of the following:

o  Completed application forms: one for Villanova (due February 24) and another for EUSA...the organization that arranges the Madrid internships (Due two weeks prior to the Skype interviews - tentatively March 12-17). 1. Other requirements for The Office of International Studies:

o  Copy of the photo page of your passport.

o  Copy of your flight itinerary (If there is sufficient interest I will organize a group flight out of Philadelphia yet you may want to book your own flight if you wish to travel in Europe for a while after your internship ends or if you depart/return from another destination).

2.  Other requirements for EUSA:

o  A copy of the photo page of your passport.

o  Three official passport photos (with name and university written on the back) along with a scanned photograph in .jpg format (I will be happy to do this if you send me one official passport photo or a .jpg of your passport photo).

Application Notes:

1. Between both Villanova's Office of International Studies and EUSA you will need to make 2 copies of your passport photo page.

2. Notice: Students are not finally accepted to this program until they have successfully completed the EUSA Skype interview "en Espaρol". Upon completion of your interview a representative from EUSA will contact Dr. Taylor and inform him of your final acceptance. If a student is not accepted at this point, Villanova will refund any deposit you submitted with your Villanova application in February.

3. Tuition is typical posted on the OIS website shortly after Thanksgiving for the coming summer. I have been told it will be $10,500 for summer 2012: this includes everything but your airplane ticket and personal expenses while in Spain.

Description of Academic Component during Orientation (in Spanish; credit counted in Main Academic Course):

This is a one week (14 hours) intensive Spanish course to be taken by students in the week before the start of their work placement in Madrid. Five “spaces” will be explored be means of the language course. The purpose of the course is to help the students become familiar with the vocabulary, grammatical structures, as well as specific cultural situations they will encounter in these spaces:

• The Spanish home or shared flat.

• The social environment outside of the workplace and home.

• The social language and culture used in the workplace.

• The professional language and culture of their particular internship site.

• The professional language and current business situation in Madrid by means of a visit to the Madrid Chamber of Commerce or to the US Commercial Services Office.

Main Academic Course:

ECO 3108: Global Political Economy – Spain; 3 credits (in English):

Course satisfies the VSB ECO3108 requirement. For VSB students who have already completed this requirement, arrangements may be made with Dr. Taylor to pursue an independent study in economics.

This course will begin during the first week in Spain with subsequent meetings on Wednesday afternoons for the remainder of the stay. This course will be taught in a seminar format with a final 8-10-page paper due no later than August 17, 2011.

Note: For Villanova students you will receive a letter grade for this course that counts as an economics elective for majors and minors, as the required 3108 course for VSB students, and as a free elective for everyone else. In contrast, the internship grade is recorded as a satisfactory (S) or unsatisfactory (U) grade....equivalent to Pass/Fail and does not affect your GPA. This course is the same as I teach during the regular semester except that there is a built in case study of Spain along with some e-learning exercises to enhance your knowledge of the Spanish social and economic system. Here is the syllabus to my non-specialized Eco. 3108 course (there will be some minor modifications to the e-learning requirements):
