Comparative Economic Systems

Fall 2011

Course Description:

Introduction to the basic principles needed for the understanding and comparative analysis of economic systems. We begin by reviewing the methodological concepts used for organizing, analyzing and comparing economic systems. We then discuss the structure, performance, efficiency and growth aspects of various forms of economic architecture and the institutional elements leading to the noted outcomes. The historical socialist and national economic models are then presented and explored. Throughout the course we will examination actual economic systems ranging from the "Anglo-Saxon" model (e.g. the United States), the "Social Welfare" model (e.g. Sweden), the "Asian Model" (e.g. China) and the movement toward regional economic integration (e.g. the European Union).
